HAVANA (AP) - A top European Union official said Cuban President Fidel Castro shares the bloc's interest in strengthening ties and tackling sensitive issues such as human rights and called on all parties to avoid "useless provocations."

Guantanamo officers leave without appeal

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Three army officers involved with the detention camp for terror suspects have left the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay without appealing their punishments for "personal misconduct," an official said Saturday.

Colombia island plane crash kills eight

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - A twin-engine commercial plane crashed Saturday while taking off from the tiny Colombian island of Old Providence, killing eight people, including a 3-year-old boy, and injuring six other passengers, authorities said.

U.N. diplomats star in soap opera

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - In an upcoming episode of Colombia's favorite soap opera, a former prostitute determined to better the world strides into a spacious office to discuss the fight against human trafficking with U.N. officials. "You have our full support to battle this crime," a gray-suited Frenchman, Thierry Rostan, tells her. Rostan sounds just like a diplomat _ because in real life that's exactly what he is.
