17 Colombian soldiers killed in ambush

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Marxist rebels ambushed a Colombian military convoy on Wednesday, killing 17 soldiers _ the latest in a spate of bloody attacks that have undermined government claims the rebels are being defeated.

Mexico migrants avoid U.S. civilian watch

AGUA PRIETA, Mexico (AP) - The number of Mexican migrants trying to sneak into the United States through southeast Arizona has dropped by half since hundreds of U.S. civilians began guarding the area earlier this week, say Mexican officials assigned to protect their citizens.
