Brazil leader slips in polls before vote

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Brazil's first working-class president slipped in the polls on the eve of elections Sunday, indicating he may not win a convincing first-round victory but will instead be forced to campaign for another month amid spiraling corruption allegations against his party.
 
No sign of survivors from Brazil plane

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - Military helicopters lowered a rescue team by rope Saturday into the remote Amazon jungle site where an airliner slammed into the ground, but authorities held out little hope of finding survivors among the 155 people on board.
 
Chavez: Assassination attempt foiled

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez, who has repeatedly spoken of various plots on his life, said Saturday a sniper with a long-range gun and a motorcycle to escape on had planned to shoot him as he exited a helicopter on a recent trip to western Venezuela.
