RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has widened his lead over his rival a little over a week before Brazil's Oct. 29 presidential runoff, a respected polling institute said Friday.

Strong earthquake rattles Peruvian coast

LIMA, Peru (AP) - A strong earthquake rattled Peru's southern coast on Friday, but no damage or injuries were reported. The magnitude 6.4 quake struck at 5:48 a.m. below the floor of the Pacific Ocean, 56 miles northwest of the coastal city of Pisco, according to Peru's Geophysics Institute. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake as magnitude 6.5.
