Veteran Chinese leader Bo Yibo dies

BEIJING (AP) - Bo Yibo, the last of the "Eight Immortals" who led China through economic reforms and the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, has died, an official news agency reported Tuesday. He was 98.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said Tuesday he wants to extend the combat tours of 1,200 soldiers amid rising violence, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he was "strongly inclined" to recommend a troop increase to President Bush if commanders believe it is needed.

Purported Taliban spokesman arrested

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan intelligence agents arrested a purported Taliban spokesman after he crossed into the country from Pakistan, an agency official said Tuesday. Dr. Muhammad Hanif, who often contacted the news media claiming to speak for the hard-line militia, was arrested at the border town of Torkham on Monday, said Sayed Ansari, the spokesman for Afghanistan's intelligence service. Two people traveling with him were also detained.

Hong Kong limits pregnant Chinese women

HONG KONG (AP) - Pregnant women from mainland China who are near their due date will be turned away at Hong Kong borders if they cannot prove they have appointments in the city's hospitals, officials said Tuesday. The number of births by mainland Chinese women in Hong Kong nearly doubled in 2005 _ from 10,128 in 2003 to 19,538 _ according to the city's Hospital Authority. Many come to evade China's one-child policy, take advantage of higher quality health care or earn Hong Kong residency rights
