NKorea ready to discuss nuke disarmament

BEIJING (AP) - North Korea expressed its readiness Thursday to discuss initial steps of its nuclear disarmament, raising hopes for the first tangible progress at international talks on Pyongyang's atomic weapons program since they began more than three years ago.

Report: U.S., NKorea signed nuclear memo

TOKYO (AP) - The United States and North Korea signed a memorandum during talks last month by which Pyongyang would begin closing a nuclear reactor while the U.S. starts providing energy assistance, a major Japanese newspaper reported Thursday.

Japan to try to resolve island dispute

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's prime minister pledged Wednesday to regain four disputed northern islands from Russia, saying it was time to end the bickering between Tokyo and Moscow over the prime fishing grounds. "The territorial issue is a matter of national concern, and it is important for each person to be interested in the problem to mobilize efforts," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said at an annual rally to garner support for the islands' return.

Taliban controls southern Afghan town

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Taliban militants remain in control of a southern Afghan town nearly a week after capturing it, but NATO expects the Afghan government to soon reassert its authority there, an alliance spokesman said Wednesday.
