Uzbek rights activist goes on trial

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) - A human rights activist accused of distributing Islamic extremist propaganda went on trial Monday, activists said, the latest in a string of trials targeting government critics in the tightly controlled Central Asian nation.

Bomb hits market in southern Thailand

PATTANI, Thailand (AP) - Suspected Islamic insurgents in southern Thailand exploded a bomb at a busy night market and wounded 20 people Monday, police said. Earlier in the day, police found the bodies of two Buddhist villagers, one beheaded, apparently slain by Muslim rebels.
