Vietnamese leader plans first U.S. visit

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Vietnam's prime minister said on Thursday he plans to travel to the United States next month in what would be the highest-level visit by a Vietnamese leader since the end of the war between the two countries 30 years ago.

40 militants killed in Afghan fighting

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - American troops and Afghan police killed about 40 rebels and captured six during a battle in the mountains of southern Afghanistan, U.S. officials said Thursday, the latest in a string of clashes in an insurgent hotbed near the Pakistani border.

Al-Qaida's No. 3 man arrested in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistani commandos nabbed a senior al-Qaida leader, described by U.S. officials as the group's No. 3 operative, after a shootout near one of his barren hideouts. Jubilant Pakistani officials said Wednesday his arrest would help in the hunt for Osama bin Laden.
