Japan pushes for U.N. sanctions on N.Korea

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Over Chinese and Russian objections, Japan introduced a draft Security Council resolution Friday that would impose sanctions on North Korea for its series of rocket test-launches and also order a halt to its development of ballistic missiles.

S. Korea pledges to talk soon with North

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korea said Friday it would withhold food and fertilizer shipments to impoverished North Korea until the missile crisis is resolved, even as it pledged to hold high-level talks with the communist regime next week.

Japan begins withdrawing troops from Iraq

TOKYO (AP) - The first batch of Japanese troops began pulling out of Iraq Friday, with about 30 arriving in Kuwait on their way home, news reports said Friday. A C-130 transport aircraft of Japan's air force carrying about 30 troops arrived at a Kuwaiti airport Friday afternoon, Kyodo News agency reported from Kuwait. Public broadcaster NHK had a similar report.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea announced a scientific breakthrough Friday, and it had nothing to do with the missile tests that startled the world this week. Researchers developed a new cosmetic agent to make skin supple, state-run media boasted.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea has a few more cards to play if it wants to turn up the tension generated by a series of missile tests. It could fire more missiles, threaten to stage a nuclear test, stage troop exercises near the border with South Korea or send up fighter jets in an attempt to harass U.S. spy planes.
