KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - North Korea on Friday spurned appeals to join talks on its nuclear and missile programs, saying the United States should drop financial sanctions before any negotiations occur. A U.S. envoy said the communist nation was sinking deeper into isolation.

Death toll in China from storm up to 25

BEIJING (AP) - Flooding and landslides caused by Tropical Storm Kaemi have killed at least 25 people in southern China, including six who died when a torrent of water washed away a military barracks, state media said Thursday. At least 53 people were missing.
 
6.1 quake hits Indonesia's Sumatra island

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A strong earthquake rocked parts of Indonesia's North and West Sumatra provinces Wednesday. There were no immediate reports of a tsunami. The 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurred at 6:16 p.m. (7:16 a.m. EDT) and was centered under the Indian Ocean about 60 miles northwest off Nias island, said Lukito, an official at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
 
China says activist broke his own neck
