U.S. conducts military exercise off Japan

ABOARD THE USS KITTY HAWK (AP) - A U.S. aircraft carrier battle group, a contingent of Marines and dozens of Air Force fighter jets have conducted one of their biggest inter-service exercises of the year off the southern Japanese island of Okinawa.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Islamic militants linked to al-Qaida have plotted attacks on U.S. and British embassies, hotels, a mall and other targets across the country, according to a confidential Philippines government report reviewed Thursday by The Associated Press.

Airstrike may have killed Afghan civilians

QALAT, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan villagers said Thursday that U.S. warplanes had bombed houses, killing several civilians and wounding others, including an infant. U.S. forces suffered their sixth fatality in a week amid rising violence.
