Afghanistan opium cultivation skyrockets

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghanistan's world-leading opium cultivation rose a "staggering" 59 percent this year, the U.N. anti-drugs chief announced Saturday in urging the government to crack down on big traffickers and remove corrupt officials and police.

14 U.K. troops die in Afghan plane crash

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - A NATO plane crashed Saturday in southern Afghanistan, killing 14 British troops, according to a spokesman and the British Ministry of Defense. The International Security Assistance Force said the plane had reported a technical problem before going down and hostile fire did not appear to be the cause.
