Ex-Taliban seek Afghan legislative seats

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Four years ago, Mohammed Khaksar was the Taliban's deputy interior minister, a powerful post in a regime feared for its Islamic fundamentalist policies, mistreatment of women and support for al-Qaida. Now, he is one of at least four former senior Taliban officials running in U.S.-backed Sept. 18 elections for a new national legislature, seen as a key step in building Afghanistan's democracy after a quarter century of fighting.

India to consider pulling Kashmir forces

13 suspected Taliban killed in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Two hundred Afghan police, supported by U.S.-led coalition forces, killed 13 suspected Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan following a spate of guerrilla-style strikes in the area over the weekend, an Afghan official said Monday.

11 Japanese hospitals receive bomb threats

TOKYO (AP) - Major university hospitals in Tokyo have received a barrage of bomb threats linked to demands that medical schools increase their admissions, a news report and authorities said Monday. No explosives had been found so far at 11 hospitals targeted, Kyodo News agency said. Tokyo Metropolitan Police confirmed that 11 locations had received such threats.
