Security Council puts Myanmar on agenda

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Over strong opposition from China, the U.N. Security Council on Friday put Myanmar on its agenda in what U.S. officials called a "major step forward" in American efforts to increase pressure on the country's military dictatorship.

BEIJING (AP) - China on Friday denounced accusations by top U.S. officials that it was selling weapons to Iran and North Korea amid nuclear tensions with the two regimes. Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang called the criticism "groundless and irresponsible," the official Xinhua News Agency said. No other details were given.
