ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Gen. Pervez Musharraf sought Tuesday to smooth the way for his re-election as Pakistan's president, naming a successor as army chief and offering to drop corruption cases against ex-premier Benazir Bhutto _ a potential ally against Islamic militants.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Leaders of the two Koreas began formal talks Wednesday at the first summit between the divided countries in seven years, where North Korea's Kim Jong Il appeared to warm to his South Korean visitor after an initial chilly reception.
