Search for survivors in rubble called off

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Rescue workers abandoned the search Friday for survivors trapped in the rubble of last week's earthquake, though individual efforts continued, with an 18-month-old girl pulled out alive from the ruins of her home.

Quake hero buries wife, then helps others

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (AP) - The smallest of the seven graves was Dr. Khalid Awan's nephew, the most painful that of his wife. He buried her after the earthquake collapsed the district courthouse in which she worked as a judge. Barely 24 hours later, he opened a makeshift medical camp on a rocky field near his ruined home.

BALAKOT, Pakistan (AP) - On prayer mats set atop the roof of one flattened mosque, the men bowed their heads in silence, seeking solace amid the rubble. For devout Muslims in this quake-ruined town, it was the first time Friday prayers were held since last weekend's devastating quake. They came by the hundreds _ some carrying shovels, some wearing face masks _ all looking for spiritual comfort.
