Strong quake hits Afghan-Pakistani border

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A strong earthquake struck remote northeastern Afghanistan and shook neighboring Pakistan, the scene of a devastating quake two months ago. Hours after the quake, officials were trying contact isolated communities to determine whether it caused damage or injuries.
 
Thai official disputes parents' claim

PHUKET, Thailand (AP) - A couple who said they believed their lost daughter was the child in a grainy photo taken after last year's tsunami received the girl's corpse months ago, the Thai official leading the victim identification effort said Tuesday.
 
U.S. forces in Afghanistan change tactics

Envoy: Bin Laden may not be in control

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Osama bin Laden may no longer have operational control of his terrorist network, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan said Monday. Ryan Crocker said bin Laden cannot communicate with his followers because he likely is hiding in a remote area, Pakistan's Geo Television and state-run PTV reported after the ambassador met with local journalists.

South Korea's Hwang returns to hospital

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korean stem cell pioneer Hwang Woo-Suk briefly left a hospital Monday and made a tearful return to work after being treated for extreme stress brought on by an ethics scandal over his groundbreaking research. By the end of the day, however, Hwang had returned to the hospital for unspecified reasons, said Seoul National University spokesman Lim Jong-pil. He had been hospitalized since Wednesday, and it wasn't immediately known how long he would stay.
