Mourners reflect on the year since tsunami

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - Mourners returned to battered shorelines Monday to mark one year since the Indian Ocean tsunami crashed ashore in a dozen countries, laying waste to coastal communities and sweeping away at least 216,000 lives.

PERALIYA, Sri Lanka (AP) - There is no happy ending to this story. How could there be with a son dead and a home destroyed? Yet a year after the tsunami tore into this village and through this family, there are signs of lives slowly rebuilding. The dead son's mother still wakes up crying, but less frequently. One daughter is enrolled in nursing school, another teaches sewing to homeless women. The father has emerged from a long silence. And the family's new house is under construction.

Tsunami survivor returns to Thailand

PHUKET, Thailand (AP) - Bernd Sibrava survived the Asian tsunami last year by climbing onto a ceiling fan as torrents of water left his room with only a small pocket of air. The ordeal did not stop the 61-year-old retired Austrian from returning to the same beach-front bungalow where he escapes winter every year.
