France wins agreement in Darfur crisis

CANNES, France (AP) - Looking to end the crisis in Darfur, France won agreement on Thursday from three involved African nations that they would not support armed rebel movements on each other's territories.
 
U.N. extends Congo peacekeeping force

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Security Council voted unanimously Thursday to extend the nearly 18,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo for two months to give the secretary-general time to recommend possible changes in its mandate following last year's successful elections.

4 civilians killed by mortars in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Insurgents fired mortars Thursday into three Mogadishu neighborhoods where Ethiopian troops hold strategic positions, killing at least four civilians, witnesses said. One mortar shell fell near Mogadishu's Bakara market, killing three civilians and wounding five others, said Abdi Haji Nuur, who owns a shop in the area. Nearby Ethiopian troops returned fire with artillery, witnesses said.
 
Bombings may signal new Algeria violence

RABAT, Morocco (AP) - A deadly and carefully planned series of bomb attacks in Algeria by an al-Qaida affiliate may signal a new escalation in violence that could spread across North Africa and enter Europe, experts say.
