British warn Sudan of new sanctions

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Britain's minister for Africa accused Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of seeking a military solution in conflict-wracked Darfur and warned that he will likely face new sanctions unless he keeps agreements to promote peace.
 
Darfur rebel chief calls for cease-fire

ABECHE, Chad (AP) - The head of one of Darfur's main rebel groups said he is willing to call a cease-fire if Sudan's government stops attacks on civilians in the war-torn region and agrees to renegotiate a peace deal _ but warned of a new offensive if it fails to do so.
 
Somali insurgents warn peacekeepers away

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Somali insurgents warned Wednesday against the impending deployment of African peacekeepers in the war-ravaged country, as families began burying their dead after some of the heaviest violence to hit the capital this year.
 
Police ban rallies in Zimbabwean capital

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Police in Zimbabwe banned demonstrations in parts of the capital of Harare on Wednesday in an effort to crack down on the opposition as the country's autocratic ruler celebrated his 83rd birthday by vowing to stay in power.
 
U.N.: Sending peacekeepers to Chad risky

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned the Security Council on Tuesday that sending U.N. peacekeepers to Chad carries "serious risks" because of the volatile situation in the central African nation and possible attacks by rebel groups.
