JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - South African trade unions and church leaders called their government's tepid response to the political unrest in Zimbabwe shameful and damaging to South Africa's post-apartheid reputation as an advocate of human rights.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Police released dozens of bruised and bloodied opposition activists to the custody of their attorneys late Tuesday, while the country's main opposition leader was treated at a hospital for injuries his lawyer said were the result of savage police beatings.
 
Somalia's president targeted by mortars

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Somalia's president came under mortar attack in his palace Tuesday just hours after moving in, but escaped unharmed in the assault that killed a 12-year-old boy and wounded three of his siblings. Officials said six others were killed in the increasingly violent capital.
 
Sudan tries to block U.N. rights report

GENEVA (AP) - Sudan on Tuesday accused a United Nations panel of double standards and moved to block the U.N. Human Rights Council from considering its report accusing Khartoum of orchestrating attacks in Darfur.
 
5 abducted tourists in Ethiopia freed

LONDON (AP) - Five Europeans abducted almost two weeks ago in one of Ethiopia's most remote and inhospitable regions were released Tuesday in neighboring Eritrea after the government there pressured tribal leaders to intervene, officials said. British officials would not say whether a ransom had been paid.
