Zimbabwe opposition leader claims abuse

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - The country's main opposition leader said Wednesday that police beat him repeatedly in the head, back, knees and arm and that he lost a lot of blood in an attack that seemed intended "to inflict as much harm as they could."
 
In Darfur, some refugees avoid camps

ANKA, Sudan (AP) - With violence high in Darfur's refugee camps, some of those driven from their homes are choosing to stay away, living in rebel-controlled areas in constant fear of government or militia attack. They struggle to stay alive with little access to outside humanitarian aid.
 
5 kidnapped tourists return to Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Five Europeans freed by kidnappers said Wednesday they were treated well and expressed gratitude to the governments of Eritrea and Ethiopia that led to their release. However, in a statement issued by the British Foreign Office in London, the five diplomats and relatives said they were worried about the eight Ethiopians who were abducted with the group and who are still missing.
 
Tsvangirai a serious threat to Mugabe

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Morgan Tsvangirai, the most serious political threat to Zimbabwe's longtime president, pursued a strategy of low-profile civil disobedience until this week, when he appeared at a banned opposition meeting.
