U.N. extends peacekeeping mission in Sudan

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Security Council voted Friday to keep U.N. peacekeepers in Sudan to monitor an accord ending a 21-year civil war and authorized planning for the expected extension of the U.N. force's operations to Darfur.
 
Islamic militia shells rivals in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Three days of fighting between Islamic militia fighters and forces opposed to the clerics' growing power have left at least 73 people dead in the Somali capital, including 13 people killed Friday when the militias shelled their opponents.

South Africa rape trial worries activists

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - The day the trial opened, the woman who accuses a former South African deputy president of rape was hustled in under heavy guard, her face hidden under a cloth. The politician's supporters have burned photographs of her outside the courtroom _ even though her identity was meant to be a secret _ and depicted her as a traitor and a tramp.
