Mauritania says three prisoners escape

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - Three prisoners accused of belonging to an al-Qaida-linked Algerian militant group escaped Thursday from a jail in Mauritania's capital, officials said.
 
South African activist Moodley dies at 60

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Strini Moodley, one of the founders of the Black Consciousness Movement during South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle, died Thursday after a brief illness, his family said. He was 60.
 
China's Hu signs oil deal with Nigeria

Serge Palmi, 18, is one of 17,000 who laid down weapons last year as part a government effort to disarm Congo after its 1998-2001 civil war.
 
Chad, World Bank reach deal on oil dispute

N'DJAMENA, Chad (AP) - The World Bank has reached a preliminary deal with Chad to release some of the country's frozen oil money, an important step toward resolving a dispute over how the impoverished nation spends its newfound wealth, officials said.
 
Sudan open to discussing U.N. help

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Sudanese government opposes a U.N. takeover of peacekeeping operations in Darfur but is willing to discuss how the world body can help if a peace deal is reached to end the three-year conflict, a senior U.N. official said.
