Ivory Coast sets long-awaited elections

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) - Ivory Coast announced Thursday that long-awaited presidential elections will be held Oct. 30, while the top opposition leader said a government decision allowing him to be a candidate was a crucial step toward democracy.

U.N. tribunal gives Rwandan life sentence

ARUSHA, Tanzania (AP) - A U.N. tribunal sentenced a former local government official in western Rwanda to prison for the rest of his life for shooting to death and raping mostly Tutsi victims during the 1994 genocide.
