S. Africans shiver through harsh winter

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Snow. Floods. Icy winds. Maybe even a tornado. South Africans are facing one of their harshest winters in years, with at least four deaths blamed on flooding from heavy rain that has caused travel delays in the south and west of the country.
 
Somali gov't struggles with resignations

BAIDOA, Somalia (AP) - Somali leaders struggled to regroup Wednesday after a week in which 29 ministers quit the government, with the defectors urging the virtually powerless administration to reconcile with Islamic militants who have seized the capital.
 
U.N. chief calls for strengthened Darfur

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the Security Council to strengthen African Union forces in the Sudan's violence-wracked Darfur region and more than double it if a U.N. takeover of peacekeeping duties is approved.
