Mauritania leader: No junta members to run

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - Mauritania's new military strongman, who overthrew the president in a bloodless coup this week, assured politicians Saturday that no member of the 17-man junta will run in elections they say will take place in less than two years.
 
Niger's poor wait as food aid arrives

MARADI, Niger (AP) - The sacks of beans have been piled on the zinc-roofed warehouse's concrete floor for a week. Bottles of oil are lined up next to them like orange plastic toy soldiers. None of the food, however, was ready to help alleviate the suffering of this hungry nation Saturday.
