Woman lashed in Somalia over cannabis

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Islamic leaders in Mogadishu on Thursday gave a woman 11 lashes for selling cannabis, the first female to receive such punishment since the fundamentalist rulers took over the capital in June.

Sudan ruling party rejects resolution

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - Sudan's ruling party rejected a proposal to transfer peacekeeping in the troubled Darfur region from a weak African force to a larger and stronger U.N. mission, saying that would put the nation under the control of foreign powers, official media reported Thursday.

DILI, East Timor (AP) - Rival gangs armed with machetes and stones fought in East Timor's capital late Thursday, injuring at least 13 people, witnesses and officials said. Hundreds of youths took part in the fighting in front of Guido Valadares Hospital, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.
 
Sudan party rejects U.N. resolution

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - Sudan's ruling party has rejected a proposed Security Council resolution to transfer peacekeeping duties in conflict-wracked Darfur to a U.N. force, saying it would violate national sovereignty, official media reported Thursday.
