Homeless Ethiopians moved out of capital

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Thousands of homeless people will be moved from the capital to the countryside before next month's millennium celebration and provided help with food, shelter and medicine, a development group said Tuesday.
 
UN chief to visit Darfur, Chad and Libya

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced Tuesday that he will visit Sudan, Chad and Libya next week to promote a political solution to the conflict in Darfur and test the Sudanese government's commitment to speedy deployment of a 26,000-strong force in the region.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - A man who claimed to be a shareholder in a mining company said Tuesday the firm had unearthed a diamond twice the size of the world's largest _ a claim that set off excitement and skepticism. Industry experts said the report still needed to be verified.

U.N. OKs troops near Darfur

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Security Council gave the European Union and the U.N. the green light Monday to prepare for a military and police deployment to help protect civilians in Chad and the Central African Republic caught in the spillover of the Darfur conflict.
