CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - A herd of elephants and a church were caught up in South Africa's efforts to right one of the wrongs of the apartheid era by returning land to black communities forced from their homes by the former rulers.

AP: Smugglers move diamonds despite ban

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) - Smugglers in war-divided Ivory Coast are violating a United Nations-imposed ban on diamond sales, illegally exporting the gems to neighboring countries for overseas sales, according to a draft U.N. report obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

Liberia truth commission hears testimony

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - Liberia's truth commission began taking public testimony Tuesday, hearing from a man who said his father was killed in a political vendetta and another who said he joined rebels as a child and helped them terrorize the West African country.

Police: Nigerian attackers take facility

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - Nigerians with assault rifles overran a navy base early Tuesday, taking several troops hostage, and occupied a nearby oil facility belonging to a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, a police official said.
