Ballot counting begins in Liberia

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - Officials began counting ballots Wednesday in Liberia's first presidential race since emerging from 14 years of civil war, as international observers praised the peaceful vote as a sign the country was moving in the right direction.
 
UN: Armed men hijack aid ship in Somalia

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Armed men hijacked a ship carrying food aid Wednesday as it was unloading at a port in the strife-torn African country of Somalia, said the United Nations food relief agency, marking the second such incident in recent months.
 
Religious leader wants Islamic Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - An influential religious leader and alleged al-Qaida collaborator vowed in an interview Wednesday to establish an Islamic state in Somalia, a lawless Horn of Africa nation the United States fears could grow into a major base for Islamic terrorists.
