Nigerian leader orders probe of jet crash

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - Nigeria's president on Tuesday ordered tighter stricter safety and maintenance procedures for all Nigerian aircraft and promised an exhaustive probe into the cause of a weekend plane crash that killed 117 people.
 
Annan: Eritrea-Ethiopia a dangerous crisis

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Secretary-General Kofi Annan warned that U.N. peacekeepers face an "alarming situation" in the tense Ethiopia-Eritrean border area following Eritrean restrictions on their movements and urged the Security Council to take action to prevent another war.
 
U.S., France threaten sanctions vs. Syria

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United States and France called on Syria Tuesday to detain government officials suspected of involvement in the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister and ensure their cooperation with a U.N. probe or face possible sanctions.
