U.N. AIDS envoy criticizes South Africa

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - A top U.N. AIDS envoy said Thursday that poorer nations were doing better than South Africa in fighting the disease and accused its health minister of preventing him from working in the country, which has the most HIV/AIDS sufferers in the world.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Riot police trying to put down a fourth day of protests against Ethiopia's disputed elections shot and killed three people Thursday and wounded 12 others, including children, doctors said.
 
U.N. fears potential Ethiopia-Eritrea war

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - A senior U.N. official monitoring the tense Ethiopian-Eritrean border said Thursday he fears a new war is possible after both sides moved troops and military hardware significantly closer to the region during the past 10 days.
 
Uneasy calm returns to Ethiopia's capital

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Uneasy calm returned to Ethiopia's capital on Thursday, a day after riot police fired guns to quell protests against Ethiopia's disputed parliamentary elections. Police killed at least 23 people and wounded dozens more, hospital doctors and health workers said.
