Cruise ship escapes pirate hijack attempt

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Pirates armed with grenade launchers and machine guns tried to hijack a luxury cruise liner off the east African coast Saturday, but the ship outran them, officials said.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Sporadic gunfire erupted outside Ethiopia's capital Saturday as security forces kept a fragile calm, following a week of political violence in which at least 44 people were killed and thousands arrested.
