Rights panel rejects Darfur resolution

GENEVA (AP) - The U.N. Human Rights Council rejected on Tuesday an attempt to hold the Sudanese government responsible for halting atrocities in Darfur, opting instead for a less-pointed resolution calling on all warring parties to end abuses.
 
Chad military plane shot down near Sudan

N'DJAMENA, Chad (AP) - A Chadian military reconnaissance plane was shot down in eastern Chad on Tuesday, a government spokesman said, and a rebel group claimed responsibility. A government spokesman blamed neighboring Sudan for backing the rebels and said it was "a state of war."
 
Volcano eruption poses threat in Congo
