Sudan gov't, Darfur rebels open new talks

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - Sudanese government officials and rebels from the country's war-wracked Darfur region opened a new round of peace talks Tuesday, with African Union mediators calling for an end to the killing of civilians.

LIBREVILLE, Gabon (AP) - Africa's longest-serving ruler, Gabon President Omar Bongo, has been re-elected to another seven-year term in office with a landslide 79 percent of the vote, officials said Thursday.
 
U.S. troops rescue Ethiopian cheetah cubs

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - U.S. troops flew two endangered cheetah cubs to the Ethiopian capital Tuesday after instigating their rescue from a remote village where a restaurant owner had held them captive and abused them.
