Debate grows over number of Darfur dead

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - As violence in Darfur escalates, a debate is growing over how many people have died in what officials call the world's worst humanitarian crisis. A U.N. agency's survey cites at least 200,000 deaths, but other studies say the death toll could be closer to 400,000 or more.

GENEVA (AP) - Top U.N. officials said Wednesday that the U.N. Human Rights Council has ignored the Sudanese government's role in atrocities being committed in Darfur, and called on it to ignore regional and other loyalties and stand up to regimes that violate human rights.

Thousands return home to east Congo town

SAKE, Congo (AP) - Thousands of people who fled four days of fighting in an eastern Congo town began returning home Wednesday after clashes between government forces and renegade troops subsided, witnesses said.
