U.N. agrees to withdraw some peacekeepers

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council agreed Wednesday to Eritrea's demand to withdraw Americans, Canadians and Europeans from the peacekeeping mission that monitors the tense border with Ethiopia.
 
Ruling party expected to sweep in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) - The long-ruling Revolutionary Party was expected to sweep Tanzania's presidential and parliamentary elections Wednesday, although it likely will lose some seats because of voter anger over alleged corruption in one of the world's poorest countries.
 
Peacekeeping chief extends Eritrea stay

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - The U.N. peacekeeping chief extended his stay in Eritrea on Wednesday, hoping to meet officials who refused to talk to him a day earlier as he struggled to defuse tensions along the border with Ethiopia.
