Australia pledges more Outback teachers

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Determined to prove that a national apology to Australia's indigenous population is more than empty words, the government on Thursday promised more teachers to tackle widespread illiteracy in Outback Aboriginal communities.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - The tiny Pacific islands nation of Kiribati declared the world's largest marine protected area Thursday _ a California-sized ocean wilderness that includes pristine reefs and eight coral atolls teeming with fish and birds.
