40 whales in New Zealand saved, 37 die

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - Oil refinery workers helped rescue 40 beached pilot whales in northern New Zealand Friday _ but another 37 of the whale pod died on the sandy beach, a Department of Conservation spokeswoman said.
 
Aussie PM: Leaving Iraq "enormous blow"

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Pulling troops out of Iraq in circumstances that would be seen as a defeat would be an "enormous blow" to the reputation of the United States, Australian Prime Minister John Howard said Friday.
 
Fiji army head won't meet with chiefs

SUVA, Fiji (AP) - Fiji's indigenous chiefs met Thursday to mediate a growing dispute between the government and the military over legislation that would hand prime coastal land to natives and grant amnesty to participants in the 2000 coup. But military commander Frank Bainimarama was a no-show, saying there was "very little use" in attending the 51-member Great Council of Chiefs because "the chiefs have already decided what they are going to decide."
 
Reports: Island rises near Tonga islands

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A new volcanic island has emerged from the ocean near Tonga in recent weeks, according to eyewitness reports from two vessels that traveled through what one called a vast field of floating pumice stone spewed by the same eruption.
