Iran seeks nuclear talks with more nations

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran on Thursday called for more countries to join three European states in talks about its nuclear program, apparently hoping to bring in more sympathetic negotiators. The surprise call was part of Tehran's drive to win approval for what it says will be peaceful use of nuclear power.
 
Iraqis miss third constitution deadline

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The speaker of Iraq's parliament announced a one-day extension early Friday in talks on the new constitution _ a fourth attempt to win Sunni Arab approval. But he said that if no agreement is reached, the document would bypass parliament and be decided in an Oct. 15 referendum.
 
Abbas urges militants to hold their fire

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday denounced a deadly Israeli arrest raid that killed five Palestinians, calling it an intentional provocation aimed at undermining a six-month cease-fire, but he urged militant groups to hold their fire.
 
Italy Red Cross may have hidden insurgents

ROME (AP) - Italy's Red Cross treated four Iraqi insurgents with the knowledge of the Italian government last year and hid them from U.S. forces in exchange for the freedom of two kidnapped aid workers, a top Italian Red Cross official said in an interview published Thursday.

TULKAREM, West Bank (AP) - A group of young Palestinians sat outdoors on a warm night, snacking on sunflower seeds and chatting with a well-known militant leader when a group of white-shirted men jumped out of a Mercedes and fired, a witness said. The undercover Israeli troops killed five people, at least three of them armed.
 
Japan scrubs Iraq marshland donor meeting
