Saddam's defense team balks at Oct. trial

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Saddam Hussein's defense team complained Sunday it will not have enough time to prepare for his trial as the government officially set Oct. 19 for the start of proceedings that could end with the execution of Iraq's former dictator.
 
Katrina aid pours in from around the world

2 militants, officer die in Saudi clashes

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The Iraqi government announced Sunday that the trial of Saddam Hussein will open on Oct. 19. The statement by government spokesman Laith Kubba confirmed widespread speculation that the former strongman and several of his closest aides would face trial immediately after the national referendum on Iraq's constitution on Oct. 15.

300 airmen leaving Mideast for Gulf Coast

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - While the Army ordered its Louisiana-based troops to stay and fight in Iraq, the Air Force said Saturday it would send 300 airmen home from Iraq and Afghanistan to handle emergencies on a Mississippi air base devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
