WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate granted at least a temporary victory to the White House on Thursday, turning back an attempt to increase court oversight of the government's surveillance of phone calls and e-mails that involve people inside the United States.

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a Jan. 24 story about the renomination of Steven G. Bradbury as assistant attorney general, The Associated Press mischaracterized Bradbury's affiliation with the conservative Federalist Society. He was a member, not a co-founder of the group.
 
Bush pushes controversial memo author

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush renominated Steven G. Bradbury as assistant attorney general Wednesday, refusing to yield to Democrats who oppose a permanent job for the official who signed legal memos authorizing harsh interrogations for suspected terrorists.
