LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - President Bush flew over the largely obliterated Louisiana town of Cameron and circled an offshore oil rig Tuesday in his first up-close look at the devastation that Hurricane Rita brought to the Gulf Coast's oil producing and refining communities.

Budget battles to center on long-term cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite chest-thumping by conservatives, upcoming battles over the federal budget will center less on new spending cuts to defray the costs of hurricanes Katrina and Rita and more on salvaging promises made earlier this year to trim the growth of government programs.

White House staff urged to conserve energy

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - In a move to cut energy use, White House staffers are being reminded to adjust thermostats and shut down computers, faxes and printers at the end of the day. Public transportation and car pools are a good idea, too, they're being told.

Rice seeks assurances on Haiti elections
