Justices split on fixing appeal deadlines

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court, breaking into unusual alliances, ruled Tuesday that federal judges, on their own initiative, can correct a state's error in math and dismiss an inmate's appeal that misses a filing deadline.
