Sen. Reid says he'll vote against Roberts

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Tuesday he would oppose confirmation of Chief Justice-nominee John Roberts, questioning Roberts' commitment to civil rights and accusing the Bush administration of stonewalling requests for documents that might shed light on his views.

O'Connor urges judicial independence

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - In a climate of death threats against judges and political attempts to restrict court jurisdiction, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor warned that judicial independence must be preserved.
