Reason for new mad cow tests still unknown

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senior congressional Democrats on food and farm issues asked Monday why the Agriculture Department suddenly ordered new tests on tissue from a cow declared free of mad cow disease seven months ago.

But neither pinot noir nor the "King of Pop" were on the agenda this weekend at a conference of Republican activists, where Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the focus.

Officials bow out of conference in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) - County officials in some states are backing out of a five-day national conference next month in Hawaii, saying they would feel guilty spending taxpayers' money on expensive airfares and beachside hotels during tight budget times.
