Report: Katrina spending lacked controls

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government spent nearly $300 million for a private contractor to hire buses, trucks and planes for hurricane relief efforts _ apparently with little control or oversight, according to a Transportation Department memo released Monday.
 
AP: $1 out of $5 in 9/11 loans in default

WASHINGTON (AP) - Roughly $1 of every $5 in loans the Small Business Administration directly made to companies hurt by the Sept. 11 attacks has fallen into default, leaving the government with an uphill effort to recover millions of dollars in taxpayer money.
 
Rich, poor see poverty very differently

WASHINGTON (AP) - The dramatic differences between rich and poor that were on view during Hurricane Katrina also can be seen by how those two groups view the causes of poverty. The poor largely believe they were dealt a bad hand while the rich are more apt to say poverty is from lack of effort.
 
Ex-FDA official questions Plan B decision
