Enron trial seen as marathon, not sprint

HOUSTON (AP) - The first government witness in the fraud and conspiracy trial of two former Enron chiefs said Jeffrey Skilling gave misleading information to Wall Street analysts. But he stopped short of saying Skilling or Kenneth Lay explicitly ordered the books cooked.

Vt. program helps refugees start companies

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - When Jackie Abeneto arrived in Vermont as a refugee from the war-torn Congo, she knew no English and had been separated from her son. Over five years, she learned the language, went to school to become a licensed nursing assistant, and with help from the Red Cross, found her son in a refugee camp in Tanzania. Last year Abeneto, 47, opened her own business. She and her son now sell yam and plantain flour, mango nectar, dried fish, movies and vibrantly colored African dresse

Cuba-U.S. energy meeting changes venues

MEXICO CITY (AP) - A meeting between Cuban officials and U.S. energy executives was moved to another hotel after the Sheraton Hotel in Mexico City, under pressure from the U.S. government, asked the Cubans to leave, the event's organizer said Saturday.

PG&E to settle water contamination suits

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Friday agreed to pay $295 million to settle a series of lawsuits alleging the utility sickened hundreds of people by contaminating the water in three California counties.
