Florida faces potential orange shortage

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - It's getting hard to grow oranges in the Sunshine State. Monthslong droughts are broken by nasty hurricane seasons. Three diseases that kill and damage citrus trees and fruit continue to spread. Urban sprawl is taking over groves, and there are now fewer acres of trees than any time since 1988, when a wave of freezes crippled the industry.

Farms facing worker shortage for harvest

BATESVILLE, Texas (AP) - J. Allen Carnes needed 200 workers for the onion harvest this year on 500 acres of South Texas fields. The onion business is big in the area, and with only two months to harvest, there's little room for delay.

Ex-China bank chief enters graft plea

BEIJING (AP) - The former chairman of one of China's biggest banks pleaded guilty to charges that he took bribes to arrange loans, according to a report published Saturday. The plea adds to a string of high-level graft cases at Chinese banks.

Delta reports $11M loss for August

ATLANTA (AP) - Delta Air Lines Inc., which is operating under bankruptcy protection, reported Friday that it lost $11 million in August. The Atlanta-based company, which is the nation's third-largest airline, said the net loss in the 31-day period was equivalent to 6 cents per share.

Lower gas prices may help auto sales

DETROIT (AP) - When Nelson Ropke recently replaced his Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle with a Chrysler Pacifica crossover, gasoline prices were top-of-mind. The Grosse Pointe lawyer is a typical buyer still smarting from post-Katrina $3-per-gallon prices, but some analysts and dealers say they're seeing fewer people like him since pump prices subsided in the later part of September.

Shares of Blackberry maker hit year high

NEW YORK (AP) - Shares of Research in Motion Ltd. soared to a year high Friday after the maker of the Blackberry handheld device reported preliminary results for its fiscal second quarter and a third-quarter outlook that were above Wall Street's expectations.
